31 January 2012

We now have the long awaited remaining three prints I, III and V that complete the set of Peter Blake’s “Homage to Rauschenberg”.

Based on the fact there are very few left of prints number II and IV available it would be safe to say they will be popular and now is the time to buy as they are currently still at the release price so potentially a great investment. The set of 5 prints honours Rauschenberg’s influence of the great Pop artist’s own work in his use of found object and collage. The prints are of astounding quality with collage elements, diamond dust and glazing making them so much more than the average silkscreen.  They are available to buy singly or as part of the set of 5.

Spotlight on Jackson Pollock

27 January 2012

It is 100 years since the birth of the hugely influential American abstract painter Jackson Pollock on January 28th 1912

Jackson Pollock's best known paintings only counted for four years of his work. The intensity and scale of Pollock's finest abstract works has led him to be regarded as one of the most important American artists of his day, and major figure in the abstract expressionist movement.

Pollock's best known works are created by the 'drip and splash' style. He fixed his canvas to the floor or wall and, holding the brush or stick a foot or so away, threw lines of paint towards it, allowing chance to direct the evolution of a painting. He then manipulated the paint with an assortment of instruments, sometimes achieving textured effects using elements such as sand or broken glass.

Jackson Pollock struggled with alcoholism all his life and died in December 1956 age of 44 in an alcohol-related car accident.

2011 was a great year for Copyright with many of his limited editions selling like hot cakes including ‘Filth’ and ‘Purity’ and ‘Precious Damage’ which are now all sold out. 2012 looks like another vintage year with a joint show planned in March with Gemma Compton, and more exciting new prints in the pipeline.

In his last ever TV interview, the late Ken Russell talks to the legendary Sir Peter Blake.

11 January 2012

Here, over an intimate discussion, in what seems like catching up with an old friend, Russell talks to Sir Peter about life, their careers and about their childhoods, whilst also reflecting upon the heady days of London in the 1960’s.

In what was originally scheduled for January, this interview was brought forward as a tribute to award-winning British director Ken Russell, who died aged 84 last December. Filmed in August, this turned out to be Russell’s final TV interview.

Film clip taken from Living the Life: Sir Peter Blake Meets Ken Russell screened on Sky Arts 1/SA1HD on Friday 2 December 2011 at 8.00pm

Spotlight on Le Violon D Ingres by Man Ray

10 January 2012

Le Violon D Ingres is one of many surrealist photographs created by Man Ray.

He was inspired to create this one by the nude paintings of Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres. As in Ingres’s Grande Odalisca the model for Man Ray’s photo Kiki also wears a turban. He then altered the classical nude image by adding the f-holes of a stringed instrument. These were painted on to the photographic print which was then re -photographed to create the finished piece.

The title Le Violon d'Ingres  is a French idiom that means "hobby” and seems to suggest that, while playing the violin was Ingres's hobby, toying with Kiki was a pastime of Man Ray. The picture maintains a tension between the objectification and appreciation of the female form.

New Amy Winehouse print from Screen Prince now in our Brighton gallery

09 January 2012

A fitting tribute to a musical icon, Screen Prince’s new print of Amy Winehouse is a stunner. Hand screen-printed by Screen Prince with oil based inks on somerset Black Velvet 280 gsm paper.

As in all of his work, the image is made up of the lyrics to the songs. The gold text is the words from “Love is Losing Game, the Red from “Valerie” and the Blue/Black from “Back to Black”. The artist states “I wanted to make a portrait that made Amy an icon of singing/ song writing and a direct contrast to the portrait of her created out of pills by Jason Mercer, making her an icon of drugs”.

Check out the Brighton gallery if you are interested in this beautiful print of Amy Winehouse or any of his other prints.

Spotlight on Nataraja by Bridget Riley

05 January 2012

The title of this work Nataraja is a term from Hindu mythology and refers to the God Shiva who is 'Lord of the Dance', and often depicted as a cosmic dancer with many arms.

Bridget Riley was inspired to create this work by a trip to India she took in 1981.  The movements of the dance and the many arms are created in this piece by the use of vertical bands of colour that are cut across by diagonals. The use of contrasting colours and shapes to create the sense of movement in a flat work of art is typical of the Op Art movement which Bridget Riley was part of in the 1960’s

Peter Blake designs new Brit Award

13 December 2011

Sir Peter Blake has recently had the pleasure of designing the new statue for the BRIT Awards 2012.

The famous British Pop artist has given the statue a modern make over, using the three colours of the Union Jack flag turning the BRIT Award statue into a modern trophy for 2012, but one with echoes of the swinging sixties, the decade when Blake first rose to prominence. Blake has created some of the most iconic artwork for album sleeves from The Beatles Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band to Paul Weller’s Stanley Road.

Top 10 British Artists listed in the Independent

09 December 2011

We are delighted to say that two of our best-selling artists Sir Peter Blake and Banksy were ranked at number 8 and 9 respectively in a recent survey of the Top 10 British Artists published in the Independent newspaper.

The poll asked 1000 British artists themselves (including Charming Baker) who is the most influential artist is of all time.  The results proved unexpected mostly for the absence of some of the most famous names in the art-world. David Hockney was voted the number 1 followed by:  J.M.W. Turner (2) Grayson Perry (3) Francis Bacon (4) Jack Vettriano (5) Lucian Freud  (6) Thomas Gainsborough (7) Sir Peter Blake (8) Banksy (9) and Stanley Spencer (10). It is interesting that the artist themselves selected 10 artists that are not necessarily the most successful in terms of PR. Surprisingly, artist such as Damien Hirst and Tracy Emin do not feature in the list.

Do you agree with the list or do you think there are other more influential artists who have been missed out? Give your feedback on our facebook poll

Pakpoom Silaphan Features in Elle Magazine!

30 November 2011

Fabulous new pop artist Pakpoom Silaphan has been featured in the glamorous Elle magazine following his recent solo exhibition in London.

He has been named one of art’s “Pop Idols” due to the way he combines the commercial with the iconic.  As a child growing up in Thailand he collected old vintage advertising signs which are now used as the base of his work, painted with influential figures such as Andy Warhol and Frida Kahlo placing them as the subject matter. He admires the way such figures challenged the art scene in a way that is still relevant today stating, “Without their art, maybe I wouldn’t be doing what I’m doing”.

Check out the great prints that we have framed in the Brighton gallery now

Brighton artist Fox is on the telly!

15 November 2011

We mentioned in September that we had camera crew in the Brighton gallery following one of our artists Fox. Last week Brighton artist Fox hit our TV screens in a poignant and moving documentary about transsexuals.

They follow a group of seven people as they go about their daily lives and address the issues and prejudices surrounding gender and their identity.  As they undertake different gender affirmation procedures the group comes together to provide advice and support through the difficult decision to change gender. There are some lively characters and all of them have a story to tell.  We are really proud of Fox for speaking out so openly about a not so openly discussed subject in a genuinely interesting documentary.

My Transsexual Summer is on Channel 4 Tuesday at 10pm

‘Motel Déjà Vu, We've all seen’ will be an installation of 12 paintings and a sound-scape created from recordings and designed sounds which represent elements from the art works, creating an extra sense of immersion in the work.  It will be on show in our Soho gallery from 11th November.

Lidia uses her work as a way to record thoughts and ideas, as well as commenting on recent news and events. She describes her approach as creating a comic strip but within a single frame and without dialogue. Instead she creates the narrative through the layers of images through which the viewer has to navigate their own path.

First solo show for Mr Brainwash in the UK

12 October 2011

Mr Brainwash’s first UK solo show opened last Thursday in London at the Opera Gallery.

He was propelled to fame in the Oscar nominated film “Exit Through the Gift Shop”, where he bizarrely becomes the subject of the film as Banksy turns the camera onto him as the subject.

The film showed how he started to produce work on an epic scale after following and filming the work of established graffiti artists such as Space Invader, Banksy and Sheperd Fairey.

Mr Brainwash aka Thierry Guetta moved from his home in France to LA to persue his new career in the art world. With no formal training, his work is almost a montage of all his influences taking elements from his heroes such as Warhol and reassembling them Brainwash style with vibrant spray-painting and stencil work.

He is a controversial artist:  However you feel, his show is definitely worth a look.

Record Prices for Banksy Amidst a Hugely Successful Night for Urban Art

29 September 2011

Last week saw Bonham’s, Bond St, London, hold their bi-annual Urban Art Sale. Needless to say it was conducted to a packed auction room and despite all the gloomy media predictions about an impending economic downturn, all lots demonstrated that the art market continues to show excellent growth with record prices achieved for many artists.

In particular, it was Banksy works that set a new precedent for 2011, and not just for original works. His signed editions too saw huge results compared to their estimates with the highlight being a signed standard edition ‘CND Soldiers’ selling for over £13,000.

Leonora Oldfield, from Bonhams, said "Banksy was the star of the sale. All of his works sold, fetching above their estimates, showing that the appetite for Banksy continues."  The sale in total realised £534,700 with a very strong 95% sold by value.

The September Urban Show eclipsed Bonhams’ previous show in January this year demonstrating again that contemporary & urban artworks are bucking a current trend and it’s not all doom and gloom out there.

For more details on urban and/or contemporary art please call our London gallery on +44 (0)20 7240 7909 or email soho@artrepublic.com

Screen Prince’s vision of Kurt Cobain

21 September 2011

In the week of the 20th anniversary of the release of Nirvanas seminal album Nevermind we thought we would highlight this very topical silkscreen by Screen Prince of the late Kurt Cobain.

Screen Price has created a series of prints featuring musical icons where using text images (Calligrame) the words used by the subject literally bring them to life. In this case Kurt Cobain is bought to life with the words of the song ‘Come as You Are’ which was one of the tracks from the Nevermind album.

Screen Prince hand-draws and then hand-prints all his work, making the colours and tones unique to each piece.

Eight Year Old Banksy Uncovered in Berlin

19 September 2011

A piece by the infamous Banksy has been uncovered on a gallery wall in Berlin.  It was originally done by Banksy for a festival in 2003, eight years ago, but was subsequently painted over.  Now for a new show at the Bethanien “Do Not Think”, it has been fully restored to its original glory.  It took 10 days to remove 20 layers of paint to reveal the winged soldiers with smiley faces and machine guns alongside the caption “Every Picture Tells a Lie”. The Bethenian gallery apparently may paint over it again once the show is over but at least we’ve had the chance to see it again if only for a short while.

Risk and RETNA unveil house mural in L.A. for Heal the Bay

09 September 2011

Graffiti artists Risk and RETNA have unveiled a huge 4 story 40ft by 100ft collaborative mural on the side of a house in Santa Monica. The piece highlights the work of Heal the Bay an environmental group working to restore Santa Monica Bay.

Risk's layered colour fields signify, from top to bottom: sky (orange/yellow), pollution (purple), and water (green and blue). The colours serve as a beautiful, metal-flaked backdrop to RETNA's trademark hieroglyphics. From top to bottom, that text reads:  Oceans At Risk, Heal The Bay, Sea Shepherd, Mad Society and Restore And Protect The Worlds Oceans.

Original canvas by Hush at our Soho gallery

02 September 2011

New for this week in our London space is a formidable original canvas from British contemporary and street artist Hush. ‘Tits & Terror II’ is from Hush’s earlier works which features the heavy influence of Manga juxtaposed with a bold US graffiti aesthetic.

This is a truly striking canvas and certainly one of the best pieces to come on to the market in recent times. The work is from a series of two paintings (the other produced on board), primarily created with a combination of spraypaint and acrylic. It is signed and titled on the reverse.

Hush merges various street art approaches with traditional art practices to create complex and original work. He has participated in both solo and group exhibitions in numerous major cities worldwide and has been heavily featured in countless publications.

Iconic Salvador Dali painting returns to Glasgow

31 March 2011

Christ of St John of the Cross has just returned to Scotland after six months in the US on loan to The High Museum of Atlanta for an exhibition on Salvador Dali.

It will now go back on show in an improved position at its permanent home in Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow.

It has only left the UK six times since it was bought for Glasgow's collection in 1952.

The title of the painting was said to have been inspired by a drawing made by a Spanish Carmelite friar who was canonised as St John of The Cross in the 16th Century.  It was made after the saint had a vision in which he saw the crucifixion from above.  Dali painted his crucifixion scene set above the rocky harbour of his home village of Port Lligat in Spain.
